During The Game Awards 2021, The Matrix Awakens went live on PS5. This free demo lets you experience the world of The Matrix like never before. It even comes complete with a fully 3D modeled Keanu Reeves acting as a sort of virtual tour guide.

The Matrix Awakens Demo is a free simulation title for PC developed by Epic Game. It serves as a demo and showcase piece for the company's Unreal Engine 5. It provides gamers a glimpse of the graphical power and fidelity that future games can offer with the new game engine.

Just be aware that it's a demo and not a full-fledged game. This is evident with its short playthrough, clocking in at just under half an hour. Also, it was originally adeveloped with game consoles in mind first. The performance of the PC port is sub-optimal, to say the least, and could really use more tweaks and optimizations for it to take advantage of the hardware on tap.

The release of The Matrix Awakens Demo comes two-fold. It brings hope of a possible new Matrix game. While the other is that it provides gamers a preview into the power and capabilities of the new Unreal Engine 5. Despite being a demo, it paints a nice picture of the future that both the gaming industry and fans of The Matrix franchise can look forward to.

This week is your last chance to enter The Matrix on the latest generation of Xbox and PlayStation systems. Revealed this past December and timed to coincide with the release of The Matrix Resurrections, The Matrix Awakens is an Unreal Engine 5 demo that showcases the potential power of current video game hardware and where visuals could go in full games over the next few years. The free demo was always meant to be a limited-time promotion, so anyone interested in seeing the 4K cybercity for themselves has until July 9 to download it on Xbox Series XS and PlayStation 5.

The wait is over: The Matrix Awakens, an interactive demo for Epic's new Unreal Engine 5, is available to download for free on PlayStation 5(Opens in a new tab) and Xbox Series X/S(Opens in a new tab).

The demo should be interesting both to gamers and fans of The Matrix universe, as it was written and directed by Lana Wachowski, and features Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as Neo and Trinity (and themselves). It's a sort of a companion for the upcoming movie, The Matrix Resurrections, which is coming to theatres and HBO Max on Dec. 22.

Neither game nor film but combining elements of both, the demomorphs from a cinematic featuring incredibly realistic digital replicas of Keanu Reeves and Carrie Anne-Moss to a high-octane interactive experience of car chases and fast-paced third-person shooter action.

Alongside the Unreal Engine 5 public launch, Epic Games also released a freely downloadable sample project derived from The Matrix Awakens demo originally released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series SX consoles.

PC users have long been looking for a way to check out The Matrix Awakens UE5 demo. Of course, downloading the sample project would still require you to compile it before actually running the demo outside of the editor, but developer Victor Careil from Unreal Engine plugin maker VoxelPlugin has packaged it for your convenience, which also drastically reduces the download size from 90GB to around 17GB. Here's a reliable mirror, in case you wish to try it on your PC.

The Matrix Awakens is not long for this world. The Unreal Engine 5 tech demo will be delisted from the PS5 and Xbox Series XS storefronts just seven months after the game first arrived at The Game Awards last year.

Created by Epic Games with help from Gears of War developer The Coalition, The Matrix Awakens was both an advertisement for the fourth Matrix film as well as Epic's new Unreal Engine 5. The tech demo showcased UE5's ray tracing, particle effects, draw distance, and enhanced textures while providing a short segment of gameplay. After escaping agents in a highway chase scene that seemed more than a little inspired by the second Matrix film, players were free to explore The Matrix Awaken's map, which was 16 virtual kilometers and featured over 7,000 buildings, 43,000 parked cars, and traffic that remained on highways even after a player had left the area.

Announced in early December 2021 and officially unveiled at the 2021 Game Awards, The Matrix Awakens is a unique oddity in the world of video games. It's not exactly a full game, though it is free to download on next-gen consoles. It's also not a spin-off or continuation of the Matrix films. As soon as you start up the game, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss recount the events of The Matrix and its innovations in filmmaking before plopping you into a car chase as you run from Agents.

The full title for the "game" is The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience. As the name suggests, it is an enormous, Matrix-themed tech demo for one of the latest game design engines for the next generation, Unreal Engine 5. The vibrant and bustling city boasts an incredibly realistic look and loads of explorability, allowing players to fly across skyscrapers to appreciate the impeccably detailed city from every possible angle.

Epic Games' Unreal Engine 5 was known to be a graphical powerhouse no matter the sort of content it might be used for, but The Matrix Awakens cemented its value in the eyes of the wider gaming community. The playable demo aptly demonstrated just how scalable and impressive the new version of Unreal is, and it even let gamers give it a whirl and see how it runs in practice.

Being the closest thing available to a proper Grand Theft Auto in Unreal Engine, The Matrix Awakens tantalized the wider gaming community with a look at just how visually impressive the next generation of games may end up being. What's most important about Awakens, though, is that it wasn't a pre-baked, pre-rendered showcase at all. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series users could freely download the demo and run around its cityscape for as long as they liked and even use some of Unreal Engine 5's powerful editing tools to tweak things around.

The bad news is that The Matrix Awakens will no longer be available as of July 9. Anyone with even a passing interest in Unreal Engine 5's life-like visuals can still claim and download the demo for free until then. What's particularly important in this case, however, is that there's a silver lining present after all. All account holders that claim The Matrix Awakens via the official Unreal Engine store will still have access to its files even after it's been delisted, making the whole ordeal a bit more palatable.

Epic Games has released City Sample, a free downloadable sample project based on The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience, its interactive UE5 demo for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

After its game-changing reveal on PlayStation 5 and following a period of early access, Unreal Engine 5 is finally available for general download. In combination with the release, Epic is releasing a cut-down, Keanu-free rendition of the remarkable The Matrix Awakens demo alongside a sample game project to experiment with, called Lyra. UE5's release takes centre stage in today's State of Unreal virtual event, and we're told to expect a range of tech deep dives surrounding the technology alongside the launch of the engine itself.

Epic is promising a range of UE5 content arriving on its marketplace, but it's going to be the arrival of the Lyra sample game and The Matrix Awakens that'll be the focus for Digital Foundry as we take a look at Unreal Engine 5 in the coming days. However, for the end user looking to download UE5 and compile the demo, we should point out that it's not the full experience as seen on consoles. As predicted, all the Warner Bros Matrix assets have been stripped out, meaning that we're left with the procedurally generated city at the end of the console release.

The Matrix Awakens demo on Unreal Engine 5 seems to be a favorite setting for many superhero games. First, someone created a Superman demo inside it, and now, a Spider-Man demo has appeared online!

Hopefully, this Spider-Man demo is now available for download for free and you can get it from here. That being said, keep in mind that this is not an optimized demo, and without a powerful PC, you might run into some issues playing it.

The official description of The Matrix Awakens says it is a "free, boundary-pushing cinematic and real-time tech demo" that will offer "a glimpse into the future of interactive storytelling and entertainment".

An official trailer released on 6th December 2021 revealed that the demo shows what a future Matrix video game could look like, offering a glimpse into the future of interactive storytelling and entertainment with UE5 in this free, boundary-pushing cinematic and real-time tech demo".

From there we start to control the new character, who is going through a demonstration, something very similar to what we see in the first movie, the first few times that Neo is connected to the Matrix. During the chase, a kind of shooting tutorial begins, where the player must hit some targets to contain the agents. The transition from cinematic to gameplay is almost nil and graphically impressive.

Just revisit the first movie and notice how similar this demo is to the first time Neo is connected to the Matrix. Morpheus' conversations with Neo in this first moment are very similar to a tutorial on how to act in that simulated reality, something that was incorporated years later in theaters. Realize that this similarity is not mere coincidence, after all Reaves had commented on it in the prologue of the game. 2ff7e9595c
